Characters

Ralph – The adult Ralphie who narrates the play and (unlike the movie) is seen by the audience throughout the play. This is a most demanding role since the actor is onstage throughout the show and must relate to the audience for the duration.  The preferred age is 50+, however we will cast younger if the person is the best fit.
Ralphie – Need to play a 9 year old and have good comedic timing. He has an overactive imagination and is obsessed with getting the genuine Red Ryder BB Gun for Christmas.
Mother – Need to play 30- 40.  The mother holds the family together and although she does not speak as if she is very bright, her wisdom is obvious.
The Old Man – Need to play 35-45.  He needs to be stereotypical without being over the top.  He avoids conflict and relies on Mother to smooth out any family issues. Actor must be able to swear convincingly using nonsensical words.
Randy – The script calls for a 5 year old, more realistically we will look for someone who is older than that and can play younger. This character is on stage regularly, with relatively few lines, but they need to be delivered with great timing. If done well, Randy steals several scenes.
Miss Shields – A schoolteacher (any age) with a wide range of ways to be played.
Flick – Need to play a 9 year old in a role that is expanded from the movie. A friend of Ralphie, if something bad happens to one of the boys, more than likely it happens to Flick.
Schwartz – Need to play a 9 year old.  Also a friend of Ralphie, if someone is blamed for something bad that happens, more than likely it will be Schwartz.
Esther Jane – Need to play a 9 year old who has a crush on Ralphie.
Helen – Need to play an extremely smart 9 year old who is the only child not afraid of Scut Farkus.
Scut Farkus – Need to play a 9 to 11 year old. He is the typical local bully.

Synopsis
Charles Dickens shows us Ebenezer Scrooge as he falls asleep in his dingy, cold quarters on Christmas Eve. The old miser is visited by three ghosts, each revealing to Scrooge his wrong doings and what will happen if he continues in his evil ways. This traditional holiday classic for the whole family is filled with old English Christmas Carols guaranteed to fill you with the Christmas spirit and warm your heart. “Fa, la, la, la, la...” Santa's in the midst of rehearsing the elves, the Christmas Cats, a flock of Calling Birds, and a motley crew of bell-ringing reindeer in the Christmas Choir, when “Arrrrgh!” What's that awful sound?! Happy the Hound Dog is lending his howl to the chorus. The positive message of this musical for young children is that each of us has a special gift to share! Jean Shepherd's memoir of growing up in the Midwest in the 1940's follows 9 year old Ralphie Parker in his quest to get a genuine Red Ryder BB gun under the tree for Christmas.
NOTE: We are looking for an ensemble of actors for these shows. If you are a mom or Dad whose children are in school or Mothers Morning Out, someone who works at night or doesn’t work at all, someone who has always wanted to try acting, a homeschooled student or parent, someone who would like to get involved in back stage work such as props or running lights and sound, we need you. All rehearsals and performances will be in the daytime.
